RNC chairwoman dismisses Republican speakers as ‘Never Trumpers’

Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel dismissed Republicans who have spoken at the Democratic convention — including former secretary of state Colin Powell and Cindy McCain, the widow of former senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) — as “Never Trumpers” during a television interview Wednesday.

Asked during an appearance on Fox News about Powell, McCain and others who have spoken at the Democratic convention, McDaniel said the development “isn’t surprising” and criticized the speakers for “abandoning the principles of our party.”

“This group of Never Trumpers has left the Republican Party, and it’s frustrating to see them embrace socialism and a candidate who’s going to raise taxes,” McDaniel said.

Republicans were heavily featured in Tuesday night’s convention program, continuing a theme that began Monday. Cindy McCain narrated a poignant video chronicling the unlikely friendship between Biden, a lifelong Democrat, and her husband.

Biden’s friendship with the 2008 Republican presidential nominee has come up throughout his campaign, touted as a sign of his ability to earn respect from people across the political spectrum.

Powell, a retired general who served under three Republican presidents, also appeared via video, along with several diplomats, generals and foreign policy officials who came out to offer endorsements of Biden and sharp critiques of Trump.
