House Ways and Means chairman faces fight of his political life in Mass. primary

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard E. Neal faces the fight of his political life, as Massachusetts voters cast ballots Tuesday in a primary that has turned into yet another proxy war between establishment Democrats and liberals.

Voters in western Massachusetts’s 1st Congressional District are choosing between Neal, a three-decade incumbent who has the endorsement of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), and Alex B. Morse, the mayor of Holyoke who boasts the support of liberal Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.).

The race is just the latest faceoff between the far-left and establishment Democrats, as an internal war over the future of the party is fought in primaries across the nation. The left has secured a number of political wins: In New York, political newcomer Jamaal Bowman ousted 16-term incumbent and House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot L. Engel. In Missouri, Black Lives Matter leader Cori Bush defeated 19-year incumbent Rep. William Lacy Clay, whose family held the seat for more than half a century.
