Somehow, Cardinals outlast Seahawks in an overtime thriller
No matter. It took the Cardinals nearly the entire 10-minute overtime. But they persevered and knocked the Seahawks from the unbeaten ranks with a 37-34 triumph in a “Sunday Night Football” thriller in Arizona.
Kicker Zane Gonzalez’s 48-yard field goal with 15 seconds remaining in overtime finally won it for the Cardinals. Gonzalez tied the game with a 44-yard field goal as time expired in regulation but missed from 41 yards on the second-down kick earlier in overtime.
The Seahawks, who lost for the first time in six games this season, had a 48-yard catch and run for a would-be game-winning touchdown by Metcalf in overtime nullified by a holding penalty. That was followed by Wilson throwing his third interception, this one to Arizona rookie linebacker Isaiah Simmons, to lead to Gonzalez’s game-winning kick.
“I didn’t feel like that we were ever going to lose that game,” Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray told NBC afterward.
Really? How was that possible?
“Just the flow of the game, the feel of the game,” Murray said. “You had to be down here playing.”
The two teams combined for 1,091 yards of total offense, 572 by the Seahawks and 519 by the Cardinals. Wilson had three touchdown passes — all to Lockett — to go with his three interceptions in a 33-for-50, 388-yard passing performance. He tied Peyton Manning’s NFL record for the most touchdown passes, with 22, through his team’s first six games of a season. Wilson also ran for 84 yards. Lockett had 15 catches for 200 yards.
And somehow, all of that offense wasn’t enough for the Seahawks. Wilson cited the mistakes and said in a postgame video news conference: “Other than that, we played a great game.”
The Seahawks were ranked last in the NFL in total defense entering this weekend’s play and did nothing Sunday night to help their cause.
“At this point, I don’t have no words for you,” linebacker Bobby Wagner said in a postgame video conference. “It’s either we do it or we don’t.”
Murray threw an interception but had three touchdown passes for the Cardinals, who improved to 5-2. Murray threw for 360 yards on 34-for-48 passing. He also ran for 67 yards and a touchdown.
Two of Murray’s touchdown passes went to wide receiver Christian Kirk. The other went to wideout DeAndre Hopkins, who had 10 catches for 103 yards. Arizona wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald joined Jerry Rice as the only players in NFL history with 1,400 career catches.
Even with all of those offensive exploits, the play of the night may have been Metcalf pursuing, catching and tackling Cardinals safety Budda Baker.
Metcalf’s tackle of Baker at the 8-yard line, after a 90-yard return by Baker of a first-half interception of a Wilson pass, saved the Seahawks a touchdown. The Seattle defense followed with a goal-line stand, forcing a fourth-and-goal incompletion into the end zone by Murray.
It brought to mind Darrell Green chasing down Tony Dorsett in 1983 and Ben Watson catching Champ Bailey in 2006, among some others. Metcalf reached 22.64 mph and covered 114.8 yards on his pursuit, according to Next Gen Stats. Seahawks Coach Pete Carroll told NBC at halftime it was the “play of the century.”
But ultimately it wasn’t enough for Seattle as the Cardinals, not the Seahawks, made the biggest plays at the most crucial moments.

Cardinals beat Seahawks with field goal late in overtime

The Arizona Cardinals, finally, have won it.
The Cardinals got a 48-yard field goal by Zane Gonzalez with 15 seconds remaining in the 10-minute overtime to beat the Seattle Seahawks, 37-34.
Gonzalez tied the game with a 44-yard field goal as time expired in regulation. He missed from 41 yards earlier in overtime when Coach Kliff Kingsbury opted to kick on second down.

Third Wilson-to-Lockett touchdown comes on replay reversal

The Seahawks cashed in on a turnover with a fourth-down touchdown pass from Russell Wilson to wide receiver Tyler Lockett, thanks to an instant replay reversal. Lockett made a wondrous catch in the back of the end zone on fourth and two from the 3-yard line, getting one foot clearly in bounds and dragging his other foot along the turf just inside the line. The officials originally ruled the play a touchdown, then changed their minds and called it an incompletion. Seahawks Coach Pete Carroll challenged and got the reversal. It was the third Wilson-to-Lockett touchdown of the game. Seattle had to move 45 yards after safety Quandre Diggs’s interception of a Kyler Murray pass, on the play after Wilson had thrown an interception. Kyler Murray wove his way around Seahawks defenders and just got the football to the goal line with a dive for a five-yard touchdown run as the Cardinals, aided by a debatable late-hit call on Seattle, drew closer with the first points of the second half.
The 93-yard drive by Arizona was extended by an unnecessary roughness penalty on Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner for a hit on Cardinals tight end Dan Arnold on a third-down incompletion. DK Metcalf’s ‘play of the century’ highlights frenetic Seahawks-Cards first half

How great was that first half? Quarterback Russell Wilson threw for 250 yards and two touchdowns. Both of them went to wide receiver Tyler Lockett, who had eight catches for 133 yards. The Seahawks amassed 377 yards of total offense and lead the Cardinals, 27-17, on “Sunday Night Football” in Arizona.
And yet the best play of all was made by Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf, who caught and tackled Cardinals safety Budda Baker in one of the NFL’s all-time great chase-downs. It brought to mind Darrell Green chasing down Tony Dorsett in 1983 or Ben Watson catching Champ Bailey in 2006, among some others.
