Man sentenced for rape — two years, two continents and a faked death later

Out on bail for 24 charges, including sexual offenses against children and rape, Kim Avis of Inverness, Scotland, arrived at Los Angeles International Airport on Feb. 16, 2019, before he and his 17-year-old son drove north to Monterey Bay in a rental car. Nine days later, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office received a call from the teenager, saying his father had gone swimming and never made it back.
