Georgetown expected to hire Providence’s Ed Cooley: report

The Georgetown Hoyas are expected to hire Providence’s Ed Cooley to become their next head coach, according to a report.

The two sides are in negotiations and a deal is expected to be finalized “in the near future,” ESPN reported Monday. Cooley would replace Patrick Ewing, who was fired earlier this month after six seasons.

Cooley will be tasked with helping revive Georgetown’s program, which has become a Big East afterthought over the last few years. He joins the Hoyas after 12 seasons at Providence — a school that has made the NCAA tournament in seven seasons under Cooley.

Cooley led the Friars to a 242-153 record, with a 118-99 mark in conference play.

Cooley also leaves a fellow Big East school to join Georgetown.
