Russia-Ukraine war live updates: Moscow likely to seize Luhansk in weeks, U.S. says; E.U. chief visits Kyiv

Here are updates from across the country:

Severodonetsk: Russian forces destroyed a second bridge to the besieged city overnight and were shelling a third to try to cut off the transport of people and supplies, said Serhiy Haidai, the Luhansk governor. Russia now controls most of the city as battles continue over the Bakhmut-Lysychansk highway and the Azot industrial zone, where a fire broke out. Russian separatist leaders in Luhansk said 300 to 400 Ukrainian service members are encircled at the Azot chemical plant, though Haidai rebutted those claims.

Elsewhere in Donbas: Russian shelling damaged power lines in the northern part of the Donetsk region, forcing the shutdown of electricity substations and leaving people without power in some of the area’s biggest cities, including Kramatorsk, Slovyansk, Kostiantynivka, Bakhmut and Druzhkivka, regional governor Pavlo Kyrylenko said on Telegram.

Slovyansk region: Russian forces are advancing toward this city in the Donetsk region and have made minor gains north of it. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said its forces repelled a Russian attack on Saturday at Dolyna, 15 miles north of Slovyansk. The Institute for the Study of War forecasts that successfully attacking Slovyansk will be difficult due to challenges crossing the Siverskyi Donets river.

Kherson: In Russian-controlled Kherson, Ukrainian forces have made progress in their counterattack against Russian forces, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Saturday. Ukrainian forces recaptured the village of Tavriiske, and there was “certain success” in the Zaporizhzhia region, too, he said.

Mariupol: The Ukrainian attorney general said the deaths of 24 more children have been recorded in this southern city now controlled by Russia, bringing the confirmed number of children killed in Ukraine since the war began to 287.
