Russia makes ‘marginal gains’ near Severodonetsk

Chinese President Xi Jinping criticized the use of unilateral sanctions Friday as he addressed a Russian economic forum.

Speaking at the 25th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum via video, Xi called for the creation of an “open world economy,” while also appearing to reject the West’s response to the war in Ukraine.

“We need to advance economic globalization,” he said, stressing the importance of rejecting “attempts at decoupling, supply disruption, unilateral sanctions and maximum pressure,” and the need to “remove trade barriers, keep global industrial and supply chains stable, tackle the worsening food and energy crises, and revive the world economy.”

Xi told Russian President Vladimir Putin during a phone call this week that “all parties should responsibly push for a proper settlement of the Ukraine crisis,” according to China’s official news agency Xinhua.

However, Beijing has refused to condemn Moscow’s Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine.
