The Denver Broncos traded three players and a king’s ransom of draft picks to the Seattle Seahawks in March for Russell Wilson. They handed the nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback and former Super Bowl winner a five-year, $245 million contract extension this month. They made it clear with the trade and the contract that they are entrusting Wilson to restore the Broncos to contender status after six straight non-playoff seasons.

But, curiously, with Wilson’s first game with his new team on the line Monday night in his return to Seattle, his coach took the outcome out of Wilson’s hands. Nathaniel Hackett, in his first game as an NFL head coach, brought Wilson to the sideline and opted to attempt a field goal that would have matched the second longest in league history.
