Monet painting will draw at least $65 million at auction

A Claude Monet painting of water lilies on a pond in Giverny, France, is up for auction at the Christie’s auction house in November and will fetch at least $65 million.

The French impressionist painted the work “Le Bassin aux Nympheas” between 1917 and 1919, per the work’s lot page. It depicts the water lilies in a pond Monet created on his Giverny property, one of multiple paintings the artist did depicting the garden.

The minimum accepted price for the work will be $65 million, Christie’s officials said.

“As far as we can tell, it has never been seen publicly, which also means it is in great condition,” Max Carter, Christie’s vice chairman of 20th and 21st century art, told the Financial Times.

The work is being displayed at the auction house’s galleries at New York’s Rockefeller Center through Nov. 11. The Christie’s auction of 20th-century art, of which the Monet painting is a part, starts Nov. 7.

Another Monet painting of his lilies, “Nympheas en Fleur,” sold for $84.7 million at Christie’s in 2018, according to ARTnews magazine.
