Primary elections: Katie Britt, Rep. Mo Brooks headed to a runoff in Alabama GOP Senate primary

Welcome to special coverage of the Georgia, Alabama and Arkansas primaries and runoffs in Texas from Post Politics Now.

Today, Katie Britt and Rep. Mo Brooks are headed to a runoff in Alabama’s GOP Senate primary, the Associated Press said. Britt is a former aide to Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), who is retiring and helped boost her candidacy by donating millions of his campaign funds to a super PAC supporting her. She will face Brooks (R), support for whom Trump withdrew when his campaign appeared to be floundering. The runoff is June 21 and is occurring because neither candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote.

In Georgia, Gov. Brian Kemp won the GOP primary, handily defeating former senator David Perdue (R), who was recruited and backed by former president Donald Trump. Trump is still furious over Kemp’s unwillingness to overturn Joe Biden’s 2020 victory in the state. Kemp faces a November rematch against Stacey Abrams, whom he edged out in 2018. Rep. Lucy McBath (D) is projected to win, defeating Rep. Carolyn Bourdeaux (D) in the redrawn 7th Congressional District, according to the Associated Press. The two Democrats were drawn into the same district in the metro Atlanta area during the redistricting process.

In Texas, Attorney General Ken Paxton won the GOP runoff, defeating George P. Bush. Paxton, who is seeking a third term, had Trump’s backing in his race against Bush, the grandson and nephew of presidents and the son of former Florida governor Jeb Bush. Paxton won despite being under state felony indictment since 2015 and a separate investigation by the FBI over allegations of corruption. He will be favored in the fall in a state Trump won by about five points in 2020.
