Ukraine president to plead with lawmakers in Washington as Congress weighs more aid

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will travel to Washington this week to meet with President Biden and members of Congress, a crucial trip that comes as U.S. aid is set to run dry by month’s end and lawmakers consider approving another $60 billion.

Mr. Zelenskyy will meet at the White House with Mr. Biden and on Capitol Hill with all senators on Tuesday. House Speaker Mike Johnson will also meet with him Tuesday, the Louisiana Republican’s spokesperson said.

White House press secretary Karine Jean Pierre said Mr. Biden will “underscore the United States’ unshakable commitment to supporting the people of Ukraine as they defend themselves against Russia’s brutal invasion.”

“As Russia ramps up its missile and drone strikes against Ukraine, the leaders will discuss Ukraine‘s urgent needs and the vital importance of the United States’ continued support at this critical moment,” she added.

The Senate last week failed to pass Mr. Biden‘s national security spending request, a $110 billion package for Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan amid an impasse between Republicans and Democrats on policies to curb the record influx of migrants crossing the southern border.

The aid is likely to get punted into the new year, as Congress is scheduled to go on a three-week holiday recess after this week.

Congress has previously appropriated $111 billion for Ukraine but faces major headwinds this go-around as many Republicans question doling out more money and Democrats continue to rebuff GOP demands for the southern border.
