Threads finally spreads to EU after delay over regulatory requirements
Meta’s “Twitter Killer” is finally available in Europe.
Threads, Meta’s fledgling social media competitor to X, launched in European Union countries Thursday.
Some European users have been eagerly awaiting Threads landing overseas. Meta teased the start earlier in the week with a countdown timer on the EU version of Threads’ website.
Meta, the Facebook owner, announced when it launched Threads in July that it was holding up on spreading to the EU due to concerns it couldn’t meet the region’s strict regulatory requirements.
The European launch is likely to bring in a deluge of users for the new social media site, which has been struggling to keep an active user base.
Threads’ barebones state at the start disappointed many users. Even users wanting to switch from X to Threads lamented the lack of a web version at launch.
Since July, Threads has implemented a web version and added changes to search functionality and topic tags. The platform has even started to outpace X with downloads from app stores.
However, X remains one of the internet’s front pages and boasts millions of daily active users. This is in part due to Threads’ decision to deemphasize news and edgy topics.
